Am I a Candidate for Invisalign?
Philadelphia, Main Line, and Ardmore, Pennsylvania
Invisalign is an effective, virtually invisible and relatively painless alternative to traditional metal braces for many bite conditions and teeth spacing issues. While the benefits of Invisalign are numerous, Invisalign treatment is not for everyone.
Your consultation with Philadelphia dentist and Invisalign provider Dr. Lindsey Marshall will determine whether Invisalign is the best option for you or whether your condition warrants a different treatment, such as traditional braces.
Conditions Treatable with Invisalign
Invisalign has proven successful at treating minor to moderate teeth alignment problems and bite conditions including:
- Crossbite
- Crowded teeth
- Overbite
- Spaced teeth
- Underbite
Invisalign works via a series of clear, plastic aligners that are custom-made to fit snugly over your teeth and progressively shift them into alignment for a smile that’s both aesthetically pleasing and functionally sound.
Invisalign Candidates
In addition to presenting one of the conditions listed above, ideal Invisalign candidates are:
- In otherwise good general dental health and do not require extensive dental work
- Adults or teens age 13 and older whose mouths have stopped growing
- Nonsmokers
- Lacking severe bite abnormalities that require the use of headgear
If Invisalign is not suited for your condition, Dr. Marshall may recommend another treatment option, such as orthodontics.
Invisalign Advantages
Compared to standard metal braces, Invisalign offers many of the same benefits with none of the negatives.
Made of smooth, form-fitting, medical-grade plastic, Invisalign aligners feature no sharp metal brackets or wires to irritate your mouth. As such, there are also no painful tightening sessions necessary. You swap your old aligners for a new set every two weeks, progressively bringing your teeth into the correct position.
Unlike braces, which are often accompanied by a long list of off-limit foods, Invisalign aligners are removable, which allows you to maintain your regular diet. Although the aligners must be worn approximately 20 to 22 hours per day to be effective, they are removable for eating, drinking and cleaning.
In fact, ease of cleaning is another benefit of Invisalign. Where traditional braces can trap food particles and contribute to plaque buildup, Invisalign aligners simply pop out, allowing you to brush your teeth normally; likewise, your aligners can be cleaned with a simple brushing and rinsing.
