Porcelain Veneers, Dental Veneers
If you are thinking about having porcelain veneers for a smile enhancement, you have a lot of company. They are one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures because so many defects can be corrected in this one treatment. Not surprisingly, many companies have devised and marketed a brand of porcelain veneer and the two that Dr. Marshall has chosen to offer in her Philadelphia, Pennsylvania office offer slightly different features and advantages.
Lumineers® are made by the Den-Mat Corporation of a proprietary ceramic called Cerinate®. They can only be made in a Cerinate® Smile Design Studio – dental laboratories owned by Den-Mat.
Thin as a Contact Lens
Den-Mat Corporation markets Lumineers® as being ultra-thin, no thicker than a contact lens and about half as thick as other brands of porcelain veneers. They are 0.2 to 0.3 mm thick, whereas other veneers are about 0.5 mm thick.
For thicker dental veneers, the tooth is reshaped to allow for the veneer thickness without interfering with the person’s bite or oral comfort. The amount of enamel thus removed is about as thick as the veneers that replace it and this makes the usual veneer process non-reversible.
Because they are so thin, Lumineers can be applied with little or no enamel removed. The small Lumineer thickness added to the thickness of bonding material does not place the veneered tooth outside normal parameters. However, Lumineers can also be placed with the usual veneers protocol.
If you are in good general and oral health and are embarrassed by multiple small imperfections in your smile, then you may be a good candidate for Lumineer placement. Dr. Marshall would be able to determine your candidacy after a thorough oral examination.
