Who is a good candidate for a dental bridge?
If you have good oral hygiene but are missing one or more teeth, a dental bridge may be the right answer for you. You should not leave the space empty because it may result in shifting of the surrounding teeth and a higher susceptibility to tooth decay and gum disease.
How long do dental bridges last?
If you practice good oral hygiene and care for your dental bridge, it will likely last for many years with no problems.
What is a fixed dental bridge?
In a fixed dental bridge, the pontic (artificial tooth) fills the gap left by the missing tooth and is fused between two crowns that cover the teeth on either side of the gap. This is the most common type of bridge used in cosmetic dentistry today and cannot be removed once it is placed.
What is a cantilever bridge?
This type of bridge is placed when there are existing teeth only on one side of the gap. A dental bridge has that name “bridge” because it crosses a space between two stable points. If there is only one stable point, the bridge is constructed like a balcony – firmly anchored by two crowns on one side and extending unsupported on the other. This can be done where there is less pressure and stress on the teeth.
What is a resin bonded bridge?
A resin bonded bridge, also known as a Maryland bridge, is typically used on the front teeth. It is less expensive than other types of bridges and requires only a minimal degree of tooth modification. The replacement tooth is fused to bands that are bonded to the back surfaces of supporting teeth with a resin material.
An alternative way to replace one or more missing teeth is with implants. This procedure replaces the missing tooth roots as well, conserving gum and bone tissue.
The first step towards replacing any missing teeth is to schedule a private dental bridges consultation with Dr. Marshall. Please call or email our dentistry office today and we will be happy to do that for you. We serve Philadelphia, Main Line, and Ardmore, Pennsylvania and its surrounding areas.
