TMD/TMJ Options

Philadelphia, Main Line, and Ardmore, Pennsylvania Neuromuscular Dentistry

Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD, is a common affliction that many do not realize they have. The symptoms of TMD are varied, and often affect areas that do not seem to be connected to the jaw joint at all. For those suffering from TMD, Dr. Lindsey Marshall combines neuromuscular dentistry with cosmetic and general dentistry in her Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area cosmetic and general dentistry practice.

Causes of TMD/TMJ

TMD, sometimes referred to as TMJ after the joint it affects, occurs when the temporomandibular joint shifts out of place. This is usually caused by a misaligned bite. When the bite is not properly aligned, the teeth do not meet properly, causing the joint to shift slightly. Eventually, this misalignment can lead to a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Headache, often severe and resembling migraines
  • Ear ache
  • Clicking in the jaw joint
  • Pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders or upper back

These symptoms are often mistaken for other problems. In fact, other diagnoses should be eliminated before a diagnosis of TMD is made, because many of these symptoms can be indicative of much more serious conditions. For those who have eliminated other possible causes, though, a TMD diagnosis is often the turning point leading to significant improvement and pain reduction.

Treatment for TMD/TMJ

Neuromuscular dentists like Dr. Marshall are specially trained to diagnose and treat TMD. Once a diagnosis is made, the next step is to determine how your bite should ideally be aligned. This is accomplished using a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) device to completely relax the muscles of your jaw. Once the jaw muscles are relaxed, the natural alignment of your bite is determined.

Dr. Marshall then must decide upon the best treatment to keep your teeth and jaw properly aligned. This may include placing crowns, veneers or other restorations to move your teeth slightly, shifting the bite out of its abnormal alignment. In some cases, Invisalign or traditional orthodontic devices may be necessary. Dr. Marshall also often provides orthotics, usually worn at night, to prevent you from grinding your teeth.

If you suffer from headaches, jaw pain, ear pain, or other symptoms that could be related to TMD, and have not received an alternate diagnosis, Dr. Lindsey Marshall can help.
