LUMINEERS: A Different Path to a Great Smile
- Posted on: Sep 15 2017
Cosmetic dentistry continually offers exciting new ways to improve the appearance of teeth. In recent years, we have seen the use of porcelain veneers increase substantially. The interest in this treatment has been as impressive as the aesthetic changes that have been accomplished with fingernail-thin sheaths of porcelain. Little did we know at the time that things would get even better.
A Problem Solved
Porcelain veneers solve some problems. The coverage of a well-made veneer disguises a chip, stain, gap, or other concern. But there was an issue with the traditional method of treatment that kept some patients from getting the smile makeover they desired: permanence. One might think that the permanence of porcelain veneers would be a benefit. To many patients, it is; but not to all. Just as many people were averse to the lifelong commitment of standard porcelain veneers.
The reason such a commitment is necessary is that, for porcelain veneers to sit flush on teeth, the reduction must be performed. However slight it is, the removal of surface enamel means that a veneer will always need to be on the tooth. Veneers can last for several years but may need to be replaced at some point.
LUMINEERS solve this problem for patients who do not want to commit to replacement should a veneer suffer damage. Another term often used to describe this type of veneer is “no-prep.” To adhere an LUMINEER to the front of any tooth requires only slight conditioning, no enamel reduction at all. This is possible because the Cerinate porcelain from which LUMINEERS are made is only as thick as a contact lens. This particular type of dental porcelain is durable enough to also last several years (with good care, of course). It is no less similar to enamel than the porcelain of traditional veneers. This means the smile looks natural and beautiful as long as veneers are in place.
