How Successful Is Implant Dentistry?
- Posted on: Dec 12 2014
Before undergoing any type of surgery, one of the most important questions to ask is the procedure’s effectiveness. If you’re considering tooth replacement, Dr. Lindsey Marshall can discuss the success rate of implant dentistry when you visit our Philadelphia area office.
Dental implants have an exceptionally high success rate – approximately 95% to 98%. Advances in materials and surgical techniques have made implants more and more effective at bonding with bone to provide a solid foundation for replacement teeth.
Despite the high level of success, certain factors could make a dental implant more likely to fail, or not bond with the jawbone. These risk factors include :
- Poor dental hygiene
- Uncontrolled diabetes, gum disease, and other conditions that affect healing
- Teeth grinding
- Insufficient bone density
Dr. Marshall will carefully evaluate your bone density, gum health, and other factors to determine whether or not you’re an implant dentistry candidate. Diligent screening of patients is a crucial prerequisite for preventing implant failure.
Once the surgery is complete, Dr. Marshall will also review aftercare instructions so the implant can fuse with bone. This step can take several months, during which you can move the process forward by practicing good dental hygiene and following Dr. Marshall’s recommendations on good and bad oral health habits.
