Partial Dentures vs. Dental Implants

Many people lose teeth as they grow older. If only a few teeth are missing, many people opt for partial dentures. However, many others choose dental implants for a fuller, more attractive smile. Cosmetic dentist Dr. Lindsey Marshall helps her Ardmore, Pennsylvania patients decide what option will work best for them. Partial Dentures Partial dentures, often referred to as dental bridges, are specifically designed to replace a few teeth, usually in the back of the mouth. They are custom made to fit your mouth, and can be removed for cleaning. Unlike dental implants, partial dentures do not require surgery, and less expensive than some other options. There are some disadvantages to having partial dentures rather than dental implants, such as:

  • Lack of a tight fit – partial dentures can cause irritation when they move in the mouth
  • Lack of a secure fit – partial dentures can fall out unexpectedly when the adhesive losses its grip
  • No stimulation of growth of the jawbone

Dental Implants By contrast, dental implants are permanently embedded in the jawbone. A titanium screw is affixed to the bone. When that procedure has healed, a restoration tooth is placed on the screw. The dental implant fuses with the bone so that it stimulates bone growth in the same way as a natural tooth root. Dental implants are permanent and do not move around in the mouth like dentures do, so you don’t have to worry about irritated gums or having your dental implant fall out unexpectedly. Disadvantages to dental implants include :

  • Traditional implants require surgery
  • Some patients require bone grafts to support the implants
  • Implants require several months to fuse to the jawbone

The final decision whether to use partial dentures or dental implants to replace your missing teeth is made by you and Dr. Marshall.
