Pack These Dental Tips for your Summer Vacation

Who doesn’t feel the pull of the open road during the summertime months! Whether your plans for the summer include a road trip to visit family or friends, or a long flight across the pond, you no doubt expect to bask in the glory of downtime. Along with all those nights under the stars, summertime travel can also feel somewhat chaotic. So much to think about and stay on top of! During your time away from home, you don’t want to let your oral hygiene slip. Here, we offer a few dental tips for your summer trip.
- Stick to your healthy eating habits. Busy days away from home could spell disaster for your diet if you’re not careful. Are you going out for a day? Pack a cooler with fresh fruits and vegetables like celery and apples. These treats clean your teeth and leave minimal sugar residue compared to the tempting processed snacks you find in amusement parks and vending machines.
- Drink, rinse, repeat. Water is life to the body. It is also vital to a healthy smile. Sipping is better than chugging. When you drink larger amounts of water less frequently throughout the day, you risk acidity and plaque buildup. Water is especially crucial after snacking or drinking a sugary beverage. The rinse that you give your teeth dilutes sugar and acid and adds an ounce of protection against cavities and gum disease.
- Toothbrush care is as important as oral hygiene itself. Toothbrushes that are left in damp places never fully dry out, and this can lead to bacterial buildup on the very bristles you trust to clean your teeth and gums! Yuck! If you must use a travel toothbrush holder, make sure it has ample ventilation. If you notice moisture on the inner surface of your holder, chances are bacteria have already accumulated on your toothbrush.
- Keep it fresh. Freshen up your oral hygiene kit as you make your way through summer, and also make it easy to freshen up your mouth on long days with travel-sized floss tools and mouthwash. Choose an antibacterial product rather than one that just freshens breath. This way, you cleanse the feeling of a dirty mouth and destroy the microorganisms that can lead to decay and infection.
