What is Invisalign?

Orthodontic treatment is often thought of as an adolescent rite of passage. In truth, while many pre-teens and teenagers do find themselves sporting traditional braces, more and more adults are also choosing to have orthodontic work. For many of these people, Invisalign provides orthodontic correction without the discomfort and distracting appearance of traditional metal braces. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania cosmetic dentist Lindsey Marshall, DMD, provides orthodontic correction with Invisalign, as well as other cosmetic dentistry services. How Invisalign Works When traditional braces are placed in the mouth, metal pieces are affixed to the teeth. Rubber bands are then attached to hooks on these metal pieces, and the tension from the rubber bands causes the teeth to gradually realign themselves. With Invisalign, Dr. Marshall takes a mold of your teeth, which is used to create a three-dimensional model of what your teeth should look like after treatment has been completed. From these models, a series of plastic trays are produced. These trays represent incremental changes in the position and alignment of your teeth. You wear each tray for a certain amount of time before moving on to the next tray. Gradually, your teeth move into position to fit each individual tray, until the final tray brings your teeth into the final desired position. Advantages of Invisalign Invisalign provides several advantages over traditional braces.
- Invisalign trays are practically invisible, reducing self-consciousness in the wearer
- Invisalign trays can be removed for special occasions
- Invisalign trays can be removed for cleaning
- The plastic trays are less likely to cause discomfort or mouth injury than traditional metal braces
These advantages have led many adults to choose Invisalign for their orthodontic correction.
