Causes of Cavities

As the bacteria transform the carbohydrates into acids, saliva and additional food particles intermingle and become plaque. It is this plaque that erodes the enamel, or hard outer layer, and eventually leads to holes in the tooth.
Adults are just as prone to cavities as children. Aging can compound oral problems; issues such as gum recession, exposed tooth roots, and compromised fillings arise and create the gaps in which plaque and decay settle. Good brushing and flossing habits at home, and regular professional tooth cleanings at our office can help you prevent cavities and avoid more complex dental issues in the future. If you do have a cavity, we can treat it by placing a tooth-colored filling.
If it’s been awhile since you’ve seen a Philadelphia dentist to check for cavities, please contact Lindsey Marshall, DMD today to schedule an initial consultation. We serve patients throughout Philadelphia, Main Line, and Ardmore, Pennsylvania.
