Diet and Dentistry

There are a number of steps you can take to maintain your dental health. Dental hygiene is a relatively simple matter of getting into the right habits and following through on regularly scheduled check-ups with your dentist. Doing these things will go a long way toward ensuring that your teeth and gums stay healthy.
Healthy teeth and gums are vital for good overall health.
However, while brushing and flossing are indispensable elements of good dental hygiene, you can make life much easier for yourself and your dentist simply by watching your diet.
Your tooth enamel is the hardest part of your body, and it needs to be, as it protects the important, sensitive interior parts of your teeth. As such it’s vitally important for you to keep your tooth enamel healthy.
One way to do that is to limit your intake of sugary, caffeinated foods and beverages such as:
- Soft drinks
Moderate consumption of these items is not a significant problem, provided you brush, floss and see your dentist regularly.
However, if you frequently eat candy or drink coffee and soft drinks, the acids in these items will eat away at the enamel of your teeth. They will also stain your teeth.
