Dental Technology

Philadelphia, Main Line, and Ardmore, Pennsylvania Cosmetic Dentistry

We live in an era of sophisticated technology, and dentistry is no exception. Computers and lasers have transformed dentistry, meaning many devices and methods have been developed to give you:

  • Virtually no pain
  • Faster procedures
  • Greater safety
  • More accurate diagnoses
  • Less exposure to radiation
  • More choice in dental procedures
  • Easy patient/dentist communication
  • More comfort and less time in the dental chair

By completing the challenging LVI curriculum in both cosmetic dentistry and neuromuscular dentistry, Dr. Marshall has become familiar with the most effective dental technology and can use it to customize your dental care.

Intraoral Camera

In conjunction with our computers, Dr. Marshall uses a digital intraoral camera to provide instant images of your teeth and gums. She can display them on the chairside monitor and discuss them with you to explain possible treatments.

This device creates excellent patient education opportunities for dental conditions such as:

  • Decay and enlarged pockets
  • Fractures or impending fractures
  • Surface cracks
  • Chips
  • Leaking fillings
  • Cavity development
  • Signs of gingivitis

In some cases, you may not feel any pain from a developing dental problem. The intraoral camera is an early detection device that can help to pinpoint problems before they become troublesome.

Digital X-Rays

Through digital X-rays, Dr. Marshall is again able to share instant images with you and discuss what she sees. This method of detection allows colorization, greater magnification through the software zooming feature, and maximum accuracy for diagnosis. It also reduces your exposure to radiation by 90% compared to the exposure from traditional X-rays.

DIAGNOdent is a caries detection device that allows Dr. Marshall to locate extremely small tooth decay areas and treat them before they become large and painful. Traditional detection methods have a success rate of only 50% because of the relatively late diagnosis.

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, and it enables Dr. Marshall to restore teeth through the design and placement of tooth crowns and porcelain fillings made right here in our office. Dr. Marshall enters precise measurements into the CEREC computer’s software, and in a matter of minutes the system’s milling unit can shape a small ceramic block into your custom restoration.

Dr. Marshall will test the restoration for proper fit and then bond it permanently to your teeth. Restorations that otherwise would require two visits can thus be completed in one, since no dental laboratory is needed.

TENS is an acronym for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. The unit is small, portable, and battery-operated and sends mild electrical pulses through electrodes placed strategically on the body.

In neuromuscular dentistry, the TENS unit is used to relax jaw and facial muscles that are in spasm or are shortened due to tension, restoring them to their normal resting positions. This helps Dr. Marshall establish your correct lower jaw position and treat TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction).

K-7 Evaluation System

The K-7 Evaluation system allows Dr. Marshall to measure, record and store malocclusion and jaw joint data to accurately diagnose TMD. During your visit, you wear lightweight equipment over the head or around the neck to transmit information to the K-7 computer.

Using this technology allows Dr. Marshall can obtain information on:

  • Jaw muscle electrical activity
  • Jaw muscle movement
  • Jaw joint sounds

Soft Tissue Laser

The soft tissue laser allows Dr. Marshall to recontour the gums or remove damaged gum tissue in a quick, safe, and effective procedure. The laser heat does not burn, but does vaporize unwanted tissue, whether for dental health improvement or for increased smile attractiveness. As it works, the laser cauterizes the remaining gum tissue, dramatically reducing bleeding and any chance of infection.

The Wand

The secret of pain-free anesthetic delivery is “slow and steady” – which is hard to achieve by hand. The Wand is a computer-controlled device for painless delivery of local anesthetic. The Wand computer eliminates the slight speed variations that almost always occur during manual delivery.

The latest technology in hard and soft tissue dental laser systems.

NuCalm is a treatment system for inducing deep relaxation in patients without the use of drugs. Instead, NuCalm technology organically alters the frequency of your brain waves (a process known as entrainment) to a calm state similar to the “twilight” feeling you get just before falling asleep.

Dr. Marshall also offers comfort dentistry for anxious patients using NuCalm

Through implementation of the best state-of-the-art technology available in the dental field, Dr. Marshall can give you safer, less intrusive and faster dental work.
