Questions About Porcelain Crowns

Dental crowns are often essential for restoring the health and strength of a tooth. For many years the only options available were unsightly caps made from gold, silver, and other metals. To help patients in the Main Line area restore the health and beauty of their smile, Dr. Marshall instead provides porcelain crowns.

To learn about the benefits of porcelain crowns, please contact The Office of Lindsey F. Marshall, DMD, online or call (610) 649-0696 today. Dr. Marshall welcomes patients throughout the Main Line, including Philadelphia, Ardmore, and other communities.

What Can Porcelain Crowns Do?

Porcelain crowns can address all of the same issues as metal crowns. This includes teeth that are:

  • Cracked
  • Chipped
  • Broken
  • Misshapen
  • Extremely discolored

Crowns can also work in tandem with other dental restorations to repair and even replace teeth. A dental bridge is supported by a crown on each end, while a custom crown is often the “finishing touch” for total tooth replacement with a dental implant.

Why Choose Porcelain Crowns Over Metal?

Unlike metal restorations, dental porcelain can be fabricated to look just like your natural teeth. Dr. Marshall will customize your porcelain crown so it matches the adjacent teeth in size, shape and color so not even you will know the difference.

Porcelain crowns also have health benefits over their metal counterparts. The heavy metals used in traditional crowns can expose patients to mercury, a toxic substance with a multitude of negative effects on the body. Dr. Marshall takes every care to ensure her patients’ safety by practicing metal-free and mercury-free dentistry.

What Are the Advantages of All-Porcelain Crowns?

In addition to being indistinguishable from your natural teeth, other benefits of porcelain crowns include:

  • Functional strength
  • Aesthetic perfection
  • The ability to create single-visit crowns on-site with our CEREC machine

Ceramic restorations traditionally require two visits to complete – one to take impressions so an off-site lab can fabricate the crown, and another to put the permanent crown in place. CEREC technology reduces the need for the off-site lab and the second appointment by fabricating custom crowns right in our office.

Dr. Marshall will take precise measurements of your tooth, and the CEREC machine will mill the porcelain into a crown that meets those specifications. This process can be completed in approximately one hour – a significant time savings compared to the two weeks most dental laboratories require.
